The Dignity of Difference

Kevin The Donaldson Brothers The Tunnels Barney Denise

The Holocaust Memorial Day is an issue for everyone. The lessons of the Holocaust are of universal relevance and have implications for us all. Holocaust Memorial Day offers an opportunity for people in the UK in the 21st century to reflect upon, consider and discuss how those events still have relevance for all members of today's society.

Holocaust Memorial Day was held on Friday, January 26th in Aberdeen at The Tunnels - it was organised this year by GREC with funding from Aberdeen City Council. Kevin Guyan, Youth Project Worker at GREC, organised the event with 2007's theme 'The Dignity of Difference' in mind. He invited a range of speakers to share their experiences along with music and a range of fantastic food (prepared by The Tunnels) from around the world. Richard Foster, GREC's Graphic Designer, designed and distributed the promotional materials for the event (see below) and created a photographic slideshow. Various members of GREC's staff & volunteers helped with the preparations and on the day itself. A film supplied by the Holocaust Memorial Day Organisation completed the proceedings.

The event was a great success with over 100 people attending. We all learnt a lot from the speakers on the day, the atmospheric venue was filled with emotion as we listened to representatives of the Jewish, Communist, Gay & Lesbian, Freemason (which marked the event as a historic occasion as this apparently was the first time in Britain they had been invited to a Holocaust Memorial Day), Jehovah Witness, Disabled, Gypsy/Traveller (music by The Donaldson Brothers), Trade Unionist and Polish groups. Barney Crockett, Director of GREC, hosted the event.

A big 'thank you' to everyone involved with the event - especially all those that took part and everyone that attended on the day. Thanks also to Aberdeen City Council for funding the event and all the staff at The Tunnels who were a tremendous help throughout.
