GREC: Equality when you really need it

Counselling

GREC has a FREE counselling service that has considerable experience of working with individuals who have been harassed or discriminated against because of their race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins.

Recently, thanks to funding from BBC Children in Need, GREC has launched a new counselling service: ‘Me-Time’. The ‘Me-Time’ counselling service will provide specific, dedicated support to children and young people in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire affected by prejudice incidents, discrimination, harassment and bullying on grounds of:

  1. Race (includes Gypsy traveller community)
  2. Disability
  3. Gender
  4. Religion/Belief
  5. Sexual Orientation
  6. Age
  7. Transgender

The service – the first of its kind in Scotland – is professionally co-ordinated by a paid Counselling Co-ordinator (Molinda Thomson) who is supported by a team of professionally trained Volunteer Counsellors, who are members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and who have had training and experience in counselling children and young people.  They receive monthly supervision from an external, experienced supervisor.

The adult service has also been extended to cover the full spectrum of prejudice incidents. We offer telephone counselling and support as well as face to face.

Our service is Person-Centred – an approach used by many professional organisations, but the main difference is GREC’s ability to find someone in-house to provide practical help to affected persons when required eg Advocacy, Interpretation Service etc.
